Job Purpose:

WCS is an equal opportunity employer and seeks a Carnivore Research Assistant under the auspices of the Greater Ruaha-Katavi Landscape Program. The position plays an important role in supporting carnivore research through field-based data collection, spoor and camera trapping surveys, and the implementation of carnivore monitoring activities in remote field conditions.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Conduct fieldwork in remote and challenging environments across the landscape.
  • Support carnivore monitoring activities, including spoor surveys, camera trapping, call-ups, and other field surveys.
  • Deploy, maintain, and retrieve camera traps and other field equipment.
  • Collect accurate ecological and field data following survey protocols.
  • rack carnivores and identify spoor and other wildlife signs.
  • Support the establishment and day-to-day operation of remote field camps, ensuring effective management of field logistics, including oversight of equipment inventories, food supplies, and basic health and safety provisions.
  • Organize and maintain field equipment, supplies, and survey data.
  • Capture high-quality wildlife and field photographs for documentation and reporting.
  • Contribute to field reporting and ensure adherence to field safety procedures.

General

  • Actively embody the values of WCS by representing the organization with professionalism and adhering to the WCS Code of Conduct.
  • Provide any other assistance as requested by the line manager.

Minimum Requirements and Job Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in wildlife management or related studies.
  • At least 2 years of experience working in remote field environments.
  • Experience in carnivore monitoring, spoor identification, and ecological field surveys.
  • Strong practical field skills and ability to work independently in remote conditions.
  • Ability to use GPS units and navigation tools.
  • Experience establishing and operating remote field camps.
  • Strong wildlife and field photography skills.
  • Position is open to Tanzanian nationals only

Additional requirements:

  • Strong field-based problem-solving skills, especially in carnivore monitoring techniques
  • High level of integrity, honesty, and responsibility
  • Knowledge of MS Excel and Word
  • Experience with species identification from camera trap images
  • Familiarity with CyberTracker and/or SMART software
  • Valid driving license and extensive 4WD experience
  • Travel to the field office for long periods of time
